Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Two-Factor Authentication adds a critical layer of security by requiring a time-based code in addition to your password when logging in or performing sensitive actions.

What You Need

  • Your ByteExchange account
  • A smartphone with Google Authenticator or any TOTP-compatible app (Authy, Microsoft Authenticator, etc.)

Setup Steps

  1. Go to Settings > Security > Two-Factor Authentication.
  2. Click Enable 2FA.
  3. A QR code and a text key will be displayed.
  4. Open Google Authenticator on your phone.
  5. Tap + and select Scan a QR Code or Enter a Setup Key.
  6. Scan the QR code or manually enter the text key.
  7. Enter the 6-digit code shown in the app to verify.
  8. Save the backup key in a secure location.
Critical: Write down the backup key and store it safely. If you lose your phone without the backup key, you may be locked out of your account for an extended period.

When Is 2FA Required?

  • Logging in to your account
  • Withdrawing cryptocurrency or fiat
  • Changing security settings
  • Adding withdrawal addresses
  • Enabling or disabling API keys

Disabling or Resetting 2FA

If you have your backup key:

  1. Go to Settings > Security > 2FA.
  2. Click Reset 2FA and enter your backup key.

If you lost your backup key:

  1. Submit a support ticket with your ID and a selfie.
  2. Our security team will manually verify your identity.
  3. Processing takes 24-72 hours for security reasons.

Tips

  • Never share your 2FA codes with anyone.
  • Do not store your backup key digitally where it could be hacked.
  • Consider using Authy for encrypted cloud backup of your 2FA keys.
